The Tax Associate will be responsible for the analysis, preparation, and submission of Personal Income Tax (IRS) returns for individual clients, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely delivery. This role will also include direct client communication, follow-up on missing documentation, clarification of tax matters, and coordination of invoicing processes.

Responsibilities:


Fiscal Representation Management (Representação Fiscal)
  • Maintain the registry of all clients for whom the company acts as fiscal representative.
  • Register and update fiscal representative status on the AT Portal (Portal das Finanças).
  • Act as intermediary between clients and the Tax Authority, ensuring all notifications are correctly received and handled.
  • Monitor deadlines for represented clients (IRS, IMI, IUC, VAT if applicable).
  • Ensure client addresses, contacts, and tax status are updated to prevent compliance issues.
  • Maintain documentation proving representation (mandates, LOCs, identity documents).
  • Coordinate with legal and compliance teams to ensure adherence to regulatory obligations around fiscal representation.


Tax Analysis & Preparation (IRS)
  • Review client documentation for completeness (income statements, receipts, deductions, foreign income documents, etc.).
  • Analyze tax implications for each client and identify applicable deductions and tax benefits.
  • Prepare and submit annual IRS declarations (Modelo 3 and annexes).
  • Manage simulations, optimization, and scenarios to maximize client tax efficiency.
  • Handle communications from AT (Autoridade Tributária), including responding to notifications, requests for clarification, and compliance matters.
  • Maintain updated knowledge of Portuguese tax legislation, especially regarding IRS, dependents, NHR/RNH regimes, and foreign-source income.


Client Communication & Support
  • Serve as primary contact for assigned clients and represented non-residents.
  • Request missing documentation and ensure timely IRS submission.
  • Explain tax outcomes, payments, refunds, and compliance steps in clear and accessible language.
  • Provide support for AT account setup (Portal das Finanças credentials) and digital signature when needed.


Requirements:
  • Degree in Accounting, Taxation, Management, or similar.
  • Experience in IRS preparation is mandatory (2–3+ years).
  • Experience with AT Portal (IRS, Representação Fiscal, NIF updates).
  • Comfortable handling AT notifications and representing clients’ interests.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong sense of responsibility.
  • Professional communication skills in English.
  • Portuguese language advanced to native level is mandatory.
